I may be biased, but I am always surprised when potential clients tell me they give their excess IT equipment to “A local scrap guy”.

The simple fact is some people still do not view proper disposal of it equipment as a priority. Not to mention proper removal and destruction of hard drives or any other media that may contain information, as a top priority. Of course, these folks will take great care to password protect all company devices, ensure WiFi security, back up data files with encryption and use extraordinary means to prevent outside infiltration into company files.

Yet, these same folks will simply hand off old assets to companies that are not experts in dealing with such assets. The inherent risk involved with handling it assets in this manner is huge. Nearly every job we do results in the finding of either drives, or data tapes or similar media, even from clients who state they have removed the hard drives. I do not even need to get into the reasons why data breaches are dangerous, so why companies continue to takes risks, simply baffles me.

Any company claiming to ensure YOUR data security needs to prove HOW they handle your drives. Ask the questions, see what the facility looks like, are they insured, do they lock the vehicle transporting the drives, do they shred or do they wipe, do they have a process in place for handling the gear, is the facility secure?

Simple but important questions, and if the company is worth their salt, they provide you with the right answers.

VINELAND — When Carol Lee Carter and her 14-year-old son, Anthony, set out to return $945 the teen found in a Walmart parking lot, they had no idea just how much the owner needed it.

The cash turned out to be rent money for a mother of five living in Millville who recently had moved her family out of a homeless shelter after a lengthy stay, according to the Carters.

The Carters were returning to their car Dec. 1 in the West Landis Avenue store’s parking lot when Anthony found a bank envelope containing the cash next to their vehicle.

His mother wanted to make sure it got back to its rightful owner, so she wrote a note with her phone number, explaining she had found an unspecified item and placed it on the windshield of the van parked next to her.

Then they left.

The mystery only lasted about 15 minutes, until the owner called and left a voicemail, said Carter, a homemaker who lives on West Weymouth Road. Then, five minutes later, the woman left another voicemail.

“At that point, I could hear the panic in her voice,” Carter said.

So Carter called back. The woman was able to identify the name of the bank on the envelope and the amount of money inside it.

“There aren’t a lot of people in the world that would do that, especially around the holidays,” the woman said in a phone interview. “A lot of people who had found money would have taken it to have a great holiday for themselves. She actually had a good heart.”

The Daily Journal agreed not to print the woman’s name at her request, after she expressed concern about publicity impacting her family.

A mother of five children ranging in age from 1 to 12, the woman said she had gone to Walmart to purchase a money order to pay the rent, but dropped the envelope when she got out of her van.

“It would have been devastating to me if I had lost that amount of money and not been able to keep my place,” she said. “Especially at the holidays.”

When Carter called her back, they arranged to meet in the Walmart lot.

Carter’s husband, Donald, went struck up a conversation with the woman, who — like him — is from Bridgeton.

The woman told the Carters about being in the shelter and how much she needed the money she had lost.

She thanked them, and they parted ways.

That weekend, Carol Lee Carter was attending an open house at the home of her church’s pastor, Bill Clay, when she shared the story.

Clay, pastor of Ramoth Church in Vineland, formerly Vineland Church of the Nazarene, said he knew at that point the church needed to help out the woman.

“We just really felt it would be impossible to call ourselves Christians and turn our backs on (the woman) and her family,” Clay said.

So the decision was made to “sponsor” the family by bringing them Christmas presents and also finding out what items the woman needed for her new apartment.

Then Carol Lee Carter contacted the woman to tell her the good news.

“She told me that I was making her cry,” Carter said. “Actually, she said ‘you’re making me cry again.’”
